CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Samara backed up to the forest’s edge, where her foot caught on a root. She righted herself and realized the ogre was getting too close for her to shoot. She fired the arrow, but the ogre managed to twist, avoiding the hit. He moved quickly, even with a limp from the cut tendons.

Suddenly, the ogre cried out and leaned back. Kaine, Henriette, and Blade looked on, confused. Ulrieg must have attacked the ogre.

The distraction gave Samara enough time to gather her focus and remember the latest spell they had learned. She thrust out her hand. “Elevorto.”

The ogre rose into the air, kicking and roaring. Samara twisted her hand, and the ogre flipped and hung upside down. He expressed his displeasure with a roar.

Samara held him, wondering what to do next. She didn’t want to drop him on his head but couldn’t do anything else until she released her hold on him.

As she pondered what to do, she caught a glimpse of Paxton fighting an ogre with his flail. The spikes were embedding into the ogre’s flesh, but he was taking hits as well as the ogre fought back with his sword. Another ogre had descended on Kaine, leaving Henriette and Blade on their own.

The ogre trapped in her magic wriggled, causing Samara’s hold on him to waver. She focused on her magic, straightening the ogre’s position. Her strength was waning. Holding the ogre in the air for an extended period was using more magic than she was used to.

Another ogre was targeting Henriette. She held her scythe high. The ogre swung his sword, and Blade darted forward, blocking the strike. Metal clanged as the sword hit the double-sided axe. Blade pushed forward, knocking the sword’s edge away, spun, and swung his axe at the ogre. The ogre swerved out of the way then struck back, nicking Blade’s shoulder.

Blood oozed down Blade’s bare arm as he raised his axe and swung again. The ogre howled in pain as the axe sliced through the skin of his abdomen, but he didn’t stop. He swung his sword at Blade, catching him off guard. Henriette jumped to her feet and stopped the sword with the back of her scythe, her whole body shaking from terror and the impact.

One of the ogres fell to the ground. Luna and Mist had taken him down, leaving him lifeless. They turned and started toward another ogre who was fighting Peadar. He was fighting well even while struggling to stay on his feet.

An ogre cry sounded from the other side of the field, and Samara turned back to see one clasping his back with one hand and thrusting his sword with the other. Scratches streaked down the ogre’s bare back, but Ulrieg’s distraction didn’t help. Blade fell to the ground, a sword embedded in his abdomen. Henriette screamed, watching as the ogre pulled the sword out of Blade.

The ogre threw his head back again as more talon scratches marked his back, but Ulrieg’s attempts still didn’t stop the ogre from readying to attack Henriette.
